This is a homemade 3 ingredient tahini recipe that was a game changer for me. I cannot ever see myself paying so much for a bottle of tahini ever again and after seeing so many recipes on line on how to make tahini I still couldn’t find a recipe that worked for me.
This is what I discovered while making my tahini
The first thing was that the tahini would not necessarily come out as light in color as I had hoped and I was adamant to make mine a white color. I wanted it lighter than the natural brown color of the seeds so on one of my many trials I decided to try a squeeze of lemon juice and bang, white tahini! I was over the moon for my simple findings.
The second thing is that even though my recipe calls for 5 tablespoons of oil, let me just say that you may need more because it really just depends on the sesame, food processor or blender but the oil amount varies. If you find yourself using more oil than you need its okay 🙂
If you try this home made version ( you really should ) and even if you do buy the store bought version again you will always remember how quick & easy it is to make it yourself! And so much more affordable.
Toast, cool, add into the processor and if you don’t have a food processor you can use a mortar and pestle.
The thing about home-made recipes is that you get to decide what goes inside and there is certain sense of pride in knowing that you are giving your body and your family the very best.
I have always believed that recipes must work for you otherwise what’s the point really? You have to feel comfortable with the ingredients to enjoy making it.
You need to use ingredients that are easily available because it makes the whole process more enjoyable. Try new things, new ways of combing ingredients with what works. That simple.
What is tahini mostly used for?
Hummus ofcourse! Hummus is not only loved but also used in so many recipes, for entertaining, snacks, dips, pasta additions and even wraps. Its the bomb of dips really I think 🙂
TIPS & SUGGESTIONS
If you are going to use tahini to make a smooth & creamy hummus you may want a thick consistency
Add another bit of oil and keep processing if you find it’s still not smooth enough because it will all come together.
You want your tahini a bit lighter in color? You want to use it a sauce? Then the answer is fresh lemon juice.
For me, the lemon is a game changer! Not just in terms of color but consistency and gives a refreshing taste.
Use the normal hulled sesame which don’t cost much at all combined with a mild olive oil.
The color of my sesame seeds which once in the processor with oil turn a darker shade of brown just as they should.
