Homemade Cranberry Sauce

Miranda | My Anosmic Kitchen
Every single year, Homemade Cranberry Sauce is like gammon roast in our house, a standing tradition that the whole family looks forward to! The Christmas table is not complete without this gorgeous cranberry sauce.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cranberries
  • ¾ cup sugar granulated
  • ½ cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 to 2 tbsps orange zest
  • ½ cinnamon stick
  • 2 orange peels
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Instructions

  • Combine the ingredients. Add all the ingredients into a small pot or saucepan and stir to combine. Make sure the heat is turned to medium-high and keep stirring intermittently.
  • Simmer the sauce. Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer. Stir occasionally, you'll notice the cranberries will gently burst as they simmer and the aromas fill your kitchen of cinnamon Christmas! The sauce will take roughly 10 to 20 minutes to simmer finish.
  • Remove the cinnamon stick and orange peel. Allow the sauce to cool completely before serving or storing.

Notes

Recipe Notes
Fresh or frozen cranberries can be used, if using frozen there is no need to thaw them, simply add straight into the pot/saucepan.
Substitute the sugar for honey or maple syrup should you wish. Granulated sugar does help in thickening the sauce.
Can you use water instead of orange juice? Yes you can however, the orange juice is sweet therefore helps with the tart of the cranberries.
Does cranberry sauce thicken naturally? Yes as it simmers, it will thicken. It will also thicken as it stands.
If you find that your sauce is not as thick as you want it, simply use a teaspoon of Maizena and about 2 tablespoons of water, make a paste (slurry) and stir it while simmering.
If it's too thick after standing/cooking, add a dash of orange juice.
