Have you ever made something and then in the middle of everything, you think, mmm it's not quite what I was after? Sometimes, it's just that one last ingredient that can change the entire recipe. In this case, it was the beetroot powder!
You can 100% make this smoothie bowl without the beetroot powder, I only added it right at the end. You can also use beetroot puree for the same effect.
Ingredients Required for Beetroot Smoothie Bowl
As long as you want a smoothie bowl and not a drinking smoothie, you need frozen fruit or frozen veggies! Here is a list of ingredients for a thicker smoothie bowl.
Beetroot powder: Beetroot powder for convenience and a pop of healthy color! However, raw beets and beet powder work. You can try beet juice but I don't think you will get the same thickness and color.
Banana: Frozen bananas makes any smoothie thicker and creamier.
Almond Milk: Unsweetened almond milk or any dairy-free option like coconut milk.
Nut butter: You can use any nut butter or peanut butter of your choice. It makes the bowl super nutty and gives it a buttery, creamy texture.
Vanilla protein powder: A good quality protein powder is not only packed with nutritonal value, it also makes the smoothie nice and thick, perks up your energy and keeps you full for longer than say just a fruit smoothie.
Honey: For a touch of sweetness, add a little less if you're concerned about sweetness, you can always add it after.
Collagen powder: Definitely an optional ingredient and purely for its health benefits. I add this stuff to everything but the smoothie is great without it too.
How to Make A Beetroot Smoothie Bowl in A Food Processor
Step 1: Add the ingredients to the food processor bowl.
Step 2: Blend, stop, scrape, blend and repeat.
Step 3: Blend or whiz until you have a creamy smooth beetroot smoothie!
Step 4: Transfer to a bowl and add your favorite toppings or you can use the toppings we have listed in the recipe!
Here are my tips!
Go slow, use the pulse button on the food processor to start rather than speeding it up. The whole process goes pretty quick though. Always remember that a smoothie bowl needs much less liquid than a drinking smoothie so add the liquid gradually. Don't be in a hurry to add liquid, you'd be surprised to see what stopping and scraping can do! Use a spatular or wooden spoon to push the ingredients towards the blade.
Beetroot Smoothie Bowl Toppings
This smoothie bowl is really so good I could eat it without the toppings BUT, the toppings do add that litle extra va va voom of summer and good health!
- Fresh fruit: Top with fresh berries, cherry, blackberry, raspberries are also great. I like slices of fresh ripe banana with either a drizzle of honey or maple syrup. Sometimes I will substitute the maple and honey with coconut sugar.
- Keeping it simple with chocolate: Raw cacao powder and cacao nibs.
- Chia Seeds: Chia seeds are a superfood - high in fiber, healthy fats and yes we love the texture that it adds. If you are counting calories, chia seeds can add up!
- Almond or Coconut flakes: These don't only add a contrast to the color they also add a good crunch and they taste good too!
- Granola: Another wonderful way to add a little crunch over the top of your smoothie bowl. You can try my Clumpy Homemade Granola

Beetroot Smoothie Bowl
Ingredients
- 2 frozen bananas
- 1 vanilla protein powder (25g)
- 2 Tablespoons beetroot powder
- 1 Tablespoon nut butter, any or peanut butter
- 3-4 Tablespoons unsweetened almond milk, added gradually
- 1-2 Tablespoons honey or maple syrup, add and taste after 1 tbsp
Optional ingredients
- 1 teaspoon collagen powder (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Toppings
- ½ banana sliced
- 2 Tablespoons almond flakes
- cacao nibs
- organic goji berries
Instructions
- Into the bowl of a food processor, add all the smoothie ingredients except the milk. Start with 2 tablespoons of milk, then use the pulse button to combine everything together.2 frozen bananas, 1 vanilla protein powder (25g), 2 Tablespoons beetroot powder, 1 Tablespoon nut butter, any or peanut butter, 3-4 Tablespoons unsweetened almond milk, added gradually, 1-2 Tablespoons honey or maple syrup, add and taste after 1 tbsp, 1 teaspoon collagen powder (optional), 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Stop and scrape the bowl with a spatula or wooden spoon, pushing the ingredients towards the blade, pulse agian, stop add another tablespoon of milk then use the #1 or #2 setting to increase speed.3-4 Tablespoons unsweetened almond milk, added gradually
- You will probably need the last tablespoon of milk, add and process until you get your desired consistency.½ banana sliced, 2 Tablespoons almond flakes, cacao nibs, organic goji berries
- Pour into a bowl, top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!
