Ingredients You Will Need
Potatoes It's best to choose starchy potatoes which have a high starch content and will result in a fluffier mashed potato.
Butter You would think that the potatoes are the star ingredient right? After all, this is a mashed potatoes recipe. But friends, its the butter! The butter is the star of the show here and it adds richness and flavor to the dish!
Milk helps to create a smooth and creamy texture.
Salt is essential to bring out the flavor of the potatoes, and black pepper adds a subtle but flavorful kick.
I have my own way of making mashed potatoes and something I've done for so many years! Read on for my other ingredients and tips which really help take this mashed potato next level!
Method For Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes
Here is a how-to for producing delectable mashed potatoes:
Clean the potatoes: Wash and peel the potatoes and cut into squares. Although the instant pot can cook the potatoes with peels on and not cut into squares, I find it much easier this way.
Inner Pot: Add the cleaned and cut potatoes to the inner pot of the instant pot.
Liquid: As mentioned in my YouTube Tips For Beginners Instant Pot Lentils Recipe, the instant pot needs liquid, so add the water and salt.
Variations To This Mashed Potatoes Recipe
There are so many ways that you can customize this recipe to suit different preferences.
You can add some garlic into the mashed potatoes just makes sure it's minced! We like to add Smell and Taste spices like this Calabrese for a pop of deliciousness and heat. For more of a subtle but aromatic addition we use the Garlic and Herb. There are many different tastes and this collection and they are all 100% natural.
Cheese is also another great addition, Parmesan cheese or cheddar cheese works well too. In this recipe I've included sour cream because I love sour cream and will add it to any food especially in a great curry recipe!
Equipment
You will need the following equipment to make these mashed potatoes;
- Instant Pot
- Colander/strainer
- Potato peeler
- Vegetable knife
- Board
- Potato masher (the old fashioned spatula type with a flat underneath for mashing)
- Wooden spoon to mix the butter and milk in.
Storage
These buttery mashed potatoes are best served fresh however, if you must store the mashed potatoes, make sure they have properly cooled first. Store in the fridge for 3–4 days, or freeze for 2 months in a sealed freezer friendly container.
COOK'S TIPS!
My tip for making extraordinary mashed potatoes:
Get rid of the moisture: When you cook potatoes in water, they drain everything out. Here's how you draw out the moisture. Drain and return the pot to the same hot plate on the stove (extra low heat) or on sauté in the instant pot for about a minute or so before you start mashing.
Don't let the potatoes go cold: Always add the butter and milk while the potatoes are still hot. If possible, heat the milk first otherwise be sure to add it while the potatoes are still hot and start mashing straight away.
I am all about layers of flavor, so once the potatoes are drained, add a touch of seasoning (not a lot), add the milk, mix it in, add the butter and I know this is extra but it makes a difference! Use part of the butter in the mixing process, melt part of the butter to pour over the final mix and the last piece to go in at the end of the recipe, just before you get the lid on to lock in the heat.
