  • Red bell peppers: We are using fresh bell peppers, specifically sweet red peppers for this recipe.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Olive oil makes a great difference in this simple recipe. It adds a tangy earthiness to the dish and a delicious oily mouthfeel.
  • Dried chili flakes: Chili flakes add a nice spicy kick that balances out the sweetness of the sweet bell peppers.
  • Salt: Sea salt enhances the overall flavor.
  • Chopped fresh herbs: Use coriander, cilantro, or parsley. Fresh herbs give a pop of freshness to the dish, adding a great balance to the cooked peppers.

How to Make Air Fryer Peppers

Once you use your air fryer to roast peppers, I doubt you will go back to oven roasting them!

The air fryer method is easy, fuss-free and super quick without getting the entire kitchen hot (especially in summer!).

This is an easy 1,2,3, Step-by-Step Method

Step 1. Rinse and shake dry

Rinse the bell peppers, leave them whole, shake off excess water and place into the air fryer basket, uncrowded.

Step 2. Cook

Cook the peppers for 12 minutes on 200 degrees C/400 degrees F, rotating them halfway through cooking if necessary.

If you see one is getting more charred than the others, simply move them around for even charring.

Use a pair of tongs, they will be hot OR give the air fryer basket a shake.

Step 3. Peel, slice and serve

Once the air fryer has stopped, cover them immediatley with a sheet of foil. The steam will soften them even further and the peels come off easily.

Expert Tips

You can also try using green peppers, yellow bell peppers, or orange bell peppers for variety. Red are always my personal preference.

  • First things first, make sure to dry the peppers before roasting them in the air fryer basket. Use a clean kitchen towel to do so.
  • Let the peppers rest: After roasting, cover them with aluminum foil to let them steam. It’s the easiest way to remove the skin of the pepper without effort.
  • Slice the peppers instead of chopping: Once you’ve removed the skin, we recommend slicing them. This texture is perfect for serving with rice, meat, or as part of a burrito bowl.
  • Let the peppers rest in olive oil: For the best flavor, let the roasted red peppers sit in olive oil for 2 to 3 hours before using.
  • This helps all the flavors come together and is a great way to add richness to your favorite soup, salad, or other dishes.

Substitutions and Variations

I have a few ideas for substitutions and variations that you can confidently try.

Bell peppers: For variety, you can use a mixture of red bell peppers, green bell peppers, and orange peppers.

Each type of pepper has its unique flavor, and poblano peppers can add a mild spiciness.

Olive Oil substitute: Avocado oil is a healthy alternative.

Dried chili flakes substitute: If you’re looking for a touch of heat, try black pepper, or chile peppers.

Chopped fresh herbs substitute: If coriander isn’t your style, try herbs like thyme, chives, or oregano.

Add Italian seasoning, onion powder, or garlic: Garlic powder or fresh garlic gives the peppers a bolder taste. Onion powder or Italian seasoning for more flavor.

Cumin or chili powder: To add a Tex-Mex twist, you can add cumin or chili powder.

Add roasted onion and chili: Roast some onion for an earthy kick.

How to Store Air Fryer Roasted Bell Peppers

Refrigerate: Store your roasted bell peppers in an airtight container for up to a week. Ensure they are fully submerged in olive oil and kept in the refrigerator.

Freezing: Alternatively, you can use a freezer bag to freeze them. The shelf life of these peppers is about a week in the fridge, but freezing will extend their storage time.
