It's easy and quick but the uses of this Mexican secret sauce are endless! Even added it to a chicken marinade for my Chicken Fajita Marinade.
Use it as a dipping sauce, a dressing, a topping, add it to your favorite tacos, sandwiches, potatoes and it's actually low-fat without the mayo.
Need a touch of sweetness? Add honey or maple syrup but I suggest you decide after you've mixed the ingredients. You may or may not like it.

Check at selected grocery stores or you could buy them online.

Chipotle powder, on the other hand, brings the same smoky flavor profile as it's peppers counterpart.
Use a few teaspoons of chipotle powder. Taste as you go!
Don't confuse chipotle powder with chili powder because regular chili powder comes with a blend of other spices like cumin, salt, onion powder etc.
Chipotle powder is as unique in taste as chipotle peppers.
Both the spicy flavor and the smoky flavor is chipotle flavor chipotle chilis.
If you can't find chipotle in adobe sauce, see if you can find the powder.
Worst case scenaria, I would suggest dried whole chilies with the addition of smoked paprika and a sprinkle of chipotle flakes.
Ingredients
The beauty of this chipotle sauce lies in its simplicity.
Although it is made with simple ingredients, each ingredient plays a crucial role in achieving the perfect balance of smokiness, creaminess, and tang.
Greek Yogurt: The foundation of our sauce, Greek yogurt, adds a creamy texture while also providing a tangy undertone that complements the smoky chipotle peppers.
It’s a healthier alternative to sour cream, bringing a lightness to the sauce without compromising on flavor.
Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce: The star of the show, chipotle peppers, deliver that signature smokiness and a lot of heat.
The adobo sauce adds complexity, with a slightly sweet and tangy flavor that rounds out the spiciness of the peppers.
Fresh Lime Juice: Lime or lemon juice brightens up the sauce, cutting through the richness and balancing the smoky and spicy notes.
It also adds a fresh, zesty finish that makes the sauce irresistibly delicious!
Salt and Pepper: A pinch of salt and pepper and a touch of cumin spice.
How to Make Creamy Chipotle Sauce
Here are the easy steps on the best way to make chipotle sauce.
Combine: Add all the ingredients into a food processor or high-speed blender.
Blend: Blend until smooth.
Serve: Store in an airtight container in the fridge or use immediately over tacos, burritos, wraps, veggies, use as a dip, sauce or dressing.
Recipe Notes
- Adjusting the Heat: If you prefer a milder sauce, reduce the number of chipotle peppers before blending.
- For a spicier kick, add an extra pepper or include more adobo sauce.
- Consistency Control: If your sauce is too thick, you can thin it out with a splash of water or additional lime juice until it reaches your desired consistency.
- Blending: For the smoothest sauce, use a high-powered blender, immersion blender or food processor.
- Blitz until all the ingredients are fully combined and the sauce is silky smooth.
- Make it Ahead: This sauce often tastes even better the next day as the flavors have more time to meld.
- If you can, prepare it a day in advance and let it sit in the refrigerator overnight. This not only saves you time but also results in a richer flavor.
- Serving Temperature: For the best flavor, let the sauce sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes before serving.
- Cold sauce can sometimes dull the flavors, especially the spiciness and smokiness.
Substitution Ideas
Greek Yogurt Substitute: If you’re out of Greek yogurt or prefer a dairy-free option, you can use plain coconut yogurt or a silken tofu blend.
Both options will maintain the creamy texture while offering a slightly different flavor profile.
Garlic: Fresh garlic or garlic powder can be used.
How to Use Chipotle Sauce | Serving
As a Dip: Serve it as a dip for french fries, sweet potato fries, chicken wings, or vegetable sticks. Its creamy texture makes it a perfect companion for crunchy snacks.
On Tacos and Burritos: Drizzle it over tacos, burritos, tortilla chips, black beans or quesadillas to add a smoky, spicy kick to your Mexican-inspired dishes.
In Sandwiches: Spread it on sandwiches or burgers for an extra layer of flavor that elevates the entire dish.
As a Salad Dressing: Thin it out with a bit of extra lime juice or olive oil, and use it as a zesty dressing for salads or grain bowls.
With Grilled Meats: Use it as a sauce for grilled chicken, steak, or shrimp. The smokiness of the chipotle pairs beautifully with charred meats.
How to Store Chipotle Sauce?
Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
It gets thicker as it stays in the fridge so don't worry too much about making it too thick.
Give it a few hours in the fridge and it will thicken.
