This is the best peanut butter oats recipe! It's everything you love in a breakfast bowl that's healthy, delicious, satisfying and leaves you feeling fuller for longer. With more good energy, this delicious oat bowl is worth the 10 minutes it takes to make it. Creamy from the peanut butter and oats cooking together and fluffy from the optional chia seeds. I've used rolled oats but any oats works, note that quick oats may be softer and will cook faster, slightly different texture.
Oats is the foundation of many a great way to baked oatmeal recipes, peanut butter overnight oats and many more. You see a lot of oats recipes that add the peanut butter as a topping after it's cooked but I love adding the peanut butter into the oats as it cooks! You get a real creamy oats and peanut butter experience when you cook them together.
Peanut butter lovers are often ready to eat peanut butter from a spoon! Everyone who love PB, has done that at some point, surely 🙂
Simple Ingredients
An oatmeal bowl using a few main ingredients.
- Peanut Butter: Use any peanut butter, natural, peanut butter, nut butters, crunchy, creamy peanut butter, they all work. Personally I like sugar free peanut butter and in this recipe, crunchy peanut butter was used.
- Rolled Oats: This is your best choice oats for this recipe and if you are making an overnight oats recipe, rolled oats is best.
- Water: Again, either just water or milk and you can use half milk, half water. Use any milk.
- Salt: To balance the taste out, sea salt is a good choice.
Optional Ingredients
- Chia Seeds: Great nutritional value in chia seeds. My daughter introduced me to chia seeds a few years back and it took me a while to get used to them, but now, I add them to so many foods!
- Cinnamon: Cinnamon and cinnamon sugar are delicious on oats. This recipe I added a sprinkle of cocnut sugar over the banana before eating, for a delicious sweet taste.
How To Cook Creamy Oats
Combine: In a small saucepan or pot, add all the ingredients except the toppings and combine. Oats, salt, cinnamon, chia seeds, peanut butter and water and stir to combine. Feel free to add any other spice that you prefer or vanilla extract.
Cook the oats: Cook over medium heat for roughly 7 to 10 minutes or better still, until the liquid is all absorbed and you have a creamy oats. Don't forget to stir making sure those chia seeds and peanut butter are well combined. This is not quick-cooking oats, it's rolled oats which takes a mere minute or two longer, but you have to stir it while it cooks.
Serve and enjoy! Into bowls or a bowl and add sliced banana, drizzle peaut butter, honey or maple syrup, a sprinkle of cinnamon and/or chia seeds.
Recipe Notes
Cooking Oats: To ensure a creamy fluffy oats, do not cook and leave. You need to stir it while it cooks to check that the chia seeds don't stick together.
Consistency: If you want the consistency a little thinner, simply add a couple tablespoons of liquid, milk or water.
Peanut butter: You can use any peanut butter or nut butter.
Spice: Cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg are optional spice pinch to add into the oats.
Banana: Sliced ripe banana over cooked oats and finished with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a drizzle of honey or maple syrup is delicious!
Tip: To try something different next time, add ½ mashed banana to cook with the oats for a creamier oats.
Toppings For Peanut Butter Oatmeal Recipe
Peanut Butter: For drizzling the peanut butter, simply add a couple tablespoons of peanut butter to a small microwave bowl and melt on 20 to 30 second-burts on high heat.
Fruit: Banana slices is what we love on top after the oats has cooked but, you can also add banana slices into the oats as it cooks.
Other: Chia seeds most definitely add volume to the oats but if you don't stir the oats as it cook, those chia seeds will clump together.
Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal
Simply add banana slices into the oats to cook for a creamy oats. In which case, you may want to omit the peanut butter.
Serving Ideas
Serve this hot oatmeal bowl however you prefer and with any toppings of your choice. I like a sprinkle of brown sugar, extra cinnamon, honey or pure maple syrup. A splash of milk can be added and any milk, from almond milk to full cream or fat free, your choice.
