It’s a total weeknight lifesaver: toss the frozen mince and a cup of water into the Instant Pot, pressure cook for 20 minutes, then whip up a quick sauce if you like — and dinner is done!

Why Youll Love This Recipe

  • No thawing required – straight from freezer to dinner in one step.
  • Hands-off cooking – the Instant Pot does all the work.
  • Versatile – use the cooked beef for tacos, pasta, chili, casseroles, or meal prep.
  • Optional sauce included – make a quick tomato-based sauce for added flavor.

Recipe Tips Before You Start

  • Use the trivet if you can. It does not raise the meat up but it does help create a barrier from the meat soaking in the water.
  • Give the instant pot 5 minutes before forcing pressure out when it stops.

Ingredients You’ll Need

For the Beef

  • 1 lb frozen ground beef (500 g)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) water

For the Quick Sauce (optional)

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1–2 tomatoes, chopped (or ½ cup passata or canned tomato sauce)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional flavor boosters (pick and choose):

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp curry paste or vegetable paste
  • 1 tsp dried herbs (oregano, Italian seasoning)
  • ½ tsp ground spices (cumin, paprika, chili powder) seasoning)

How to Make Frozen Mince and Sauce in the Instant Pot

Here’s a simple step-by-step to take frozen mince from solid block to saucy, flavorful base — all in one pot.

Step 1: Cook the Beef

  1. Place the trivet (metal rack) into the Instant Pot (optional, but helps keep the beef above excess liquid).
  2. Add 1 cup of water and place the frozen ground beef on top.
  3. Seal the Instant Pot and cook on High Pressure:
    • 1 lb (500 g) → 20 minutes
    • 2 lbs (1 kg) → 23–25 minutes
  4. Allow a natural pressure release for 5–10 minutes, then do a quick release.
  5. Remove the beef, drain excess liquid, and break up the meat with a fork.

💡 No need to wash the pot — we’ll use it for the sauce.

Step 2: Make the Quick Sauce (optional)

  1. Press Sauté and add olive oil.
  2. Cook onions until softened, then stir in garlic.
  3. Add chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, and any flavor boosters.
  4. Return the cooked beef to the pot and stir well.
  5. Simmer for 5–10 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Expert Tips

  • If you don’t use the trivet, the beef will cook fine but may release more liquid — just drain it afterward.
  • For extra depth of flavor, brown the cooked beef quickly on Sauté before adding it to the sauce.
  • Freeze beef in flat, thin portions so it cooks more evenly.

Variations

  • Tex-Mex Style: Add chili powder, cumin, and salsa instead of tomato sauce.
  • Italian Style: Use oregano, basil, and a splash of red wine in the sauce.
  • Low-Carb: Skip the sauce and use the beef for lettuce wraps or stuffed zucchini.

Storage

  • Fridge: Store cooked beef in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freezer: Portion and freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat straight from frozen in the Instant Pot (5 minutes high pressure).

FAQs

Can I cook more than 2 lbs of frozen beef at once?
Yes, but increase the cooking time slightly (about 28–30 minutes for 3 lbs).

Do I need to add water?
Yes — the Instant Pot needs liquid to build pressure and cook the beef properly.

Can I make this without the sauce?
Absolutely! The sauce is optional — the plain cooked beef is perfect for meal prep.

Notes

Trivet tip: Using the trivet keeps the meat elevated and avoids it sitting directly in the water.
Don’t skip the rest time: Letting the pot sit for 5 minutes before releasing helps with even cooking.
Double batch: For 1kg mince, increase pressure cook time to 23–25 minutes.
No sauce? You can skip the second step and simply use the cooked mince for tacos, wraps, or pasta.
