Christmas Cookie Jelly Shots (Red & Green)

These Christmas cookie jelly shots are pure festive fun — bright red and green layers, fluffy whipped cream, and a shower of cheerful sprinkles on top. They’re playful, nostalgic, and just the right amount of extra for the holidays.

I made these years ago (the world of recipe creation and blogging — not every recipe makes it to the blog exactly when we want it to!) while experimenting with layered desserts, and I instantly knew they were keepers. They look like little edible ornaments, come together easily, and are perfect for holiday gatherings when you want something fun but low-effort. Best of all, they can be made with or without alcohol, so everyone can enjoy them.

While they’re perfect for Christmas celebrations, these jelly shots aren’t just for the holidays. They’re a fun, make-ahead treat for dessert tables, parties, or any moment that could use a little color and joy.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • No baking required
  • Easy make-ahead holiday treat
  • Alcohol optional (kid-friendly if left out)
  • Perfect for parties and festive tables
  • Simple ingredients, big visual impact

Alcohol-Free or Boozy Christmas Cookie Jelly Shots

Whether you want festive treats for everyone or a little holiday cheer for the adults, these Christmas Cookie Jelly Shots work both ways.

Alcohol-Free Version:

  • Simply make the red and green jelly layers with water as instructed.
  • Top with whipped cream and sprinkles for a colorful, kid-friendly treat.
  • Perfect for dessert tables, holiday parties, or a fun snack anytime.

Boozy Version:

  • Add your choice of liquor — rum, vodka, or spiced liqueurs work beautifully — to the cooled jelly before it sets.
  • Chill until firm, then top with whipped cream and sprinkles.
  • The result is a festive, adult-friendly holiday shot that’s just as visually fun as the alcohol-free version.

💡 Tip: For a smoother set, always add alcohol to the jelly after it has cooled slightly. This keeps the texture firm but still jiggly.

Ingredients

For the jelly layers

  • 1 packet red jelly (strawberry, raspberry, or cherry)
  • 1 packet green jelly (lime or green apple)
  • Boiling water (as per jelly packet instructions)
  • Cold water (as per jelly packet instructions)

Optional alcohol (choose one or mix & match)

  • Vodka
  • White rum
  • Gin
  • Tequila
(Replace part of the cold water with alcohol — see notes below)

For decorating

  • Whipped cream (fresh or spray)
  • Festive sprinkles (Christmas colours work beautifully)

Equipment

  • Small plastic shot cups or mini dessert cups
  • Jug(s) for mixing jelly
  • Spoon or small ladle

Instructions

1. Prepare the green jelly

Prepare the green jelly according to packet instructions, using boiling water and cold water.
If adding alcohol, replace ¼–½ cup of the cold water with your chosen spirit.

Pour the green jelly into the shot cups, filling each cup about halfway.

Place the cups in the fridge and chill until the jelly is partially set — firm but still slightly wobbly. This usually takes 30–45 minutes.

2. Prepare the red jelly

While the green layer is setting, prepare the red jelly using the same method (and alcohol substitution if using).

Let the red jelly cool slightly at room temperature so it doesn’t melt the green layer when poured.

3. Layer the red jelly

Once the green jelly is semi-set, carefully spoon or gently pour the red jelly on top to create a second layer.

Return the cups to the fridge and chill until completely set, about 2–3 hours.

4. Decorate before serving

Just before serving, top each jelly shot with:

  • A swirl or dollop of whipped cream
  • A sprinkle of colourful festive sprinkles

Serve cold.

Tips & Notes for Perfect Jelly Shots

  • Stir the gelatin mixture thoroughly until fully dissolved — this ensures a smooth, even texture with no graininess.
  • Let the first jelly layer set slightly before adding the second so you get clean, defined red-and-green layers.
  • If using alcohol, chill it before mixing; this helps the jelly set properly without weakening the structure.
  • Pour the jelly slowly and gently when layering to avoid the colors bleeding together.
  • Keep the jelly shots refrigerated until serving so they stay firm and the whipped cream topping holds its shape.
  • Add the whipped cream and sprinkles just before serving for the freshest look and best texture.

Variations

  • Cookie-inspired: Add crushed vanilla biscuits or shortbread crumbs on top of the whipped cream.
  • Extra festive: Use edible gold stars or glitter sprinkles.
  • Creamy top: Pipe lightly sweetened cream cheese frosting instead of whipped cream.
  • Citrus twist: Use lemon jelly for the green layer for a brighter flavour.

Storage

  • Store prepared jelly shots (without cream) covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Once topped with whipped cream, serve within a few hours for best texture.

Make-Ahead Notes

  • Best made 1–2 days ahead: These jelly shots set beautifully overnight and hold their shape well.
  • Whipped cream timing: For the best look and texture, add whipped cream and sprinkles just before serving. If needed, you can add the cream a few hours ahead and keep chilled.
  • Storage: Keep covered and refrigerated at all times until ready to serve.
  • Transporting: Place the cups in a shallow container or tray so they stay upright and layers remain neat.
