Ingredients for Crispy Air Fryer Potatoes
Here are the ingredients you'll need to make the best roasted potatoes:
Potatoes - Use any potatoes that are good for roasting. The all purpose potatoes can sometimes be the "happy medium" between Waxy Potatoes and Floury Potatoes. I love Nicole potatoes.
Oil - Oil for browning and you can use vegetable oil, canola oil or avocado oil. This Extra Virgin Olive Oil is our preferred choice.
Seasoning - Use a great spice combination because spices always make a huge difference!
Salt - Maldon salt fan over here 🙂 I will sprinkle it over everything!
Herbs - Fresh rosemary, fresh thyme and fresh parsley are all great garnish options.
How to Air Fry Potatoes
Here an easy step-by-step method for easy air fryer potatoes.
Potato Prep - Wash, cut and peel. I prefer cutting into four squares. Add the potatoes into a bowl and toss in seasoning and olive oil to coat.
Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheating makes the air fryer basket nice and hot which is a good start to roasting food. If you have a preheat setting or not, you need to run the air fryer for 5 minutes.
Air-Fry - Lay the now seasoned potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Air fry for 15-20 minutes on 400 degrees F which is 200 degrees C flipping halfway through.
Flipping can mean a gentle shake to the air fryer basket or using a pair of tongs to turn the potatoes one at a time.
Serve -When the potatoes are crispy and fork-tender, serve them warm and garnish with salt and fresh herbs.
Recipe Notes For the Best Air Fryer Potatoes
Here are more tips to help you make the best air fryer potatoes. Lets start with skin-on or skin-off and which is best:
Skin-on and Skin-off Potatoes: Depends on what you looking for in the final outcome because I''ve done both and this is what I can share with you:
- Skin-on: Is a healthier option, you skip on having to peel the potatoes and the skin does get extra crispy both air fryer and oven method. You do have to flip and they do take longer to cook through than skin-off potatoes.
- Skin-off: Personally, I find that skin-off needs less oil to brown them, the seasoning seems to hold better, they cook quicker, have a smooth finished texture and the edges brown beatifully.
You miss out on the nutrients with skin-off potatoes but you can alternate whenever you make them and use both methods.
Single Layer Roasting
Air Frying in a Single Layer - If you saw my Easy Air Fryer Recipe with Lamb Chops and Sausage it was evident that I was not promoting space between the chops😅 in-fact, it was a tight fit.
Would you like to save this?
I'd like to receive tips & recipes from Anosmic Kitchen.
Did they cook? Perfectly browned meat and tender, juicy lamb chops, see for yourself.
The aim of this recipe, is to get tender potatoes on the inside and really crispy skin on the outside. Therefore, piling them up, may not give us that result. The air needs to circulate in the air fryer to give us the best crisp, hence, space between the potatoes wins.
Oil or Cooking Spray in the Air Fryer?
Use oil - As always, I prefer using oil on my food when using the air fryer. It not only helps brown the food it also adds a smooth finish, flavor and helps prevent any possible sticking.
Cooking spray - If you are going to use cooking spray, note that cooking spray can damage the lining of the inside of your air fryer over time. Cooking spray contains something called lecithin, which is a group of chemicals.
Variations
The best way to making roast potatoes is keeping it simple. Salt and a very good potato spice blend.
Which Potatoes are Best for Air Fryer Roasted Potatoes?
Russet Potatoes (starchy and good for mashed potato) and Yukon Gold Potatoes are known to be best for air frying potatoes.
In South Africa we have what is called Sifra potatoes. Most commonly used, found in most supermarkets, versatile in its cooking method. Enjoyable read on potatoes in South Africa here.
- Floury potatoes have a high starch content so they don't hold their shape well making them good for recipes like mashed potatoes and potato gnocchi.
- Waxy potatoes (low in starch and hold their shape well) These are popular for potato salad.
I am hopelessly in love with Nicole potatoes from Woolworths. Mediterranean style Waxy potatoes with a creamy texture is how they are described.
These potatoes hold their shape (waxy, low in starch) under high heat making them perfect for roasted potatoes.
There are however many variations of potatoes that you can use, including yellow potatoes (more like Yukon Gold), new potatoes and sweet potatoes. Usually, when a potato has yellow skin (like a yukon gold potato) or red skin, they are waxy potatoes.
Best Seasoning to Use for Roast Potatoes?
I use this potato seasoning, but you can use your favorite seasonings as there are a multitude, like garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, a simple salt and black pepper or any other. For best results, always use an oil to hold the seasoning together. Olive oil, avocado oil, vegetable oil etc. Remember to increase the quantity of seasoning and the cooking time for larger potatoes. Extra olive oil will help with crispy potatoes.
Do you need to air fry on high heat?
Yes, in order for the best way to a crispy outside and soft inside, you need high temperature.
How do I know when my potatoes are ready?
Your potatoes are done when they have a light golden brown color over them. If you want the edges a little more brown, let them air fry for 1-2 minutes more. Use a fork to pierce the potato, it should get to the soft inside easily.
Wash and Soak Potatoes | Flour Before Roasting?
Not in this air fryer recipe. This potato recipe in the air fryer, uses nothing besides seasoning and olive oil, air fry and serve with salt. Enjoy!
Storage for Air Fryer Potato Recipe
It's roast potatoes, how is there leftover potatoes? It happens and the good news is, you can store them so that they can still be enjoyed tomorrow.
Refrigerate: If I have a few potatoes over, I store them in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days, 4 days roughly. If there are say 3-4 potatoes left over, I know they will be eaten in the next few hours by someone lurking in the fridge so I don't bother with the airtight container. In which case, I will use a piece of plastic wrap to cover a small bowl and refrigerate for later. After that, airtight container is suggested.
Freezing: Seal them up properly in an airtight freezer bag, then in a container (not necessary but I do that with freezing food), write the date on it and store for 4-6 months.
Reheating: Thaw the air fryer roasted potatoes first, and while that's happening, preheat your air fryer, pop them into the basket on 200C/400F until warmed through.
